Our story
A Place That Found Us
Sonnenberg in Špania Dolina has been part of our lives since 2006. Its name refers to our family name and, at the same time, perfectly captures the sunny location of our home directly beneath the church of Špania Dolina. Sonnenberg is also naturally connected with the rich mining history of Špania Dolina, shaped for centuries by miners of German origin. Once known as Herrengrund, the village was famous throughout Europe and far beyond. From the 15th to the 17th century, its high-quality copper was an important commodity in global trade, reaching as far as America, India and China.
For us, however, Sonnenberg is more than just a cottage or a place. It is somewhere we enjoy spending time, coming together and creating shared memories. Gradually, it has become part of our whole family’s story – and today, we are delighted to share it with our guests.

“Although I grew up in Banská Bystrica, I had been drawn to Špania Dolina since I was young. I once admired its beauty from the roof of a cottage being renovated by my friend’s father, where I was helping out during the holidays. At the time, I had no idea that this place would one day draw me in for good and that I would eventually spend such a large part of my life here.
For me, Sonnenberg is a place where the noise of everyday life gradually fades away. Here, I can pause, take a breath and rediscover the simplicity of the things that truly matter.
Špania Dolina is also full of stories. Some are hidden in its mining history, while others live in its old houses, local legends and the memories of its residents. I love sharing them with friends and guests who choose to become part of our story, even if only for a while.”

At Sonnenberg, We Welcome You as a Family
We look after your peaceful, undisturbed and experience-filled stay together – Miloš, Milinka and our two sons. Each of us brings something different to Sonnenberg, and we will be happy to help you create a programme tailored to your preferences.
Milinka brings a sense of calm and a talent for creating a welcoming atmosphere to the time we spend together. Her interests include Pilates, the basic principles of Ayurveda and the Access Bars relaxation technique.
Miloš will welcome you on arrival, show you to your accommodation and introduce you to the history of Špania Dolina, as well as the mysterious stories surrounding this remarkable village. He can also introduce you to simple breathing techniques and will prepare the sauna and hot tub for you.
By arrangement, our sons Miloš and Miško can accompany you on an e-bike ride through the mountains around Staré Hory. If you feel like getting active, they will also be happy to show you the basics of good volleyball technique on the nearby court.
Whether you come to relax, enjoy some movement or simply find a moment of calm, we want you to feel comfortable and completely at ease at Sonnenberg.
